My Complete Stardew Valley Mushroom Guide: Every Type and How to Grow Them

Master all six Stardew Valley mushroom types with this complete foraging guide to locations, sell prices, and uses.

There is something quietly magical about foraging for mushrooms in Stardew Valley. I still remember the first time I wandered into the Secret Woods with my rusty axe, only to stumble across a cluster of Red Mushrooms glowing against the dark underbrush. That moment turned me into a mushroom hunter for life. Since then, I have spent countless in-game days tromping through caves, tapping Mushroom Trees, and even turning my little farm cave into a dedicated fungus farm. With the 1.6 update continuing to breathe new life into the valley, mushrooms remain one of the most satisfying resources to collect: they feed you, they heal you, they sell for surprising amounts of gold, and a few of them are essential for some of the best recipes in the game.

If you are like me and you want to master every mushroom in the game, you have come to the right place. Below, I am going to walk you through the six mushroom types in Stardew Valley, where to find them, how to grow them, and what to do with them once they are sitting in your backpack.

The Six Mushrooms at a Glance

Before I dive into the details, it helps to know what you are dealing with. In total, there are six mushroom types in Stardew Valley. Here is a quick overview based on my own foraging notes:

Mushroom Season Found Base Sell Price Best Location
🌋 Magma Cap Any Season 400g Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island
🍄 Common Mushroom Spring and Fall 40g Almost everywhere in Fall, Secret Woods in Spring
🔴 Red Mushroom Summer 75g Secret Woods in Summer, The Mines
🟣 Purple Mushroom Any Season 250g The Mines after floor 80, Skull Cavern
🟡 Chanterelle Fall 160g Secret Woods
🟤 Morel Spring 150g Secret Woods

Magma Cap: The Fiery Forage

My first trip to Ginger Island was overwhelming, but nothing prepared me for the Magma Cap. These fiery little mushrooms are only found in the Volcano Dungeon, and they look exactly like the False Magma Cap enemy that stalks the same halls. The first time I saw one, I nearly attacked it before realizing it was just a mushroom.

Magma Caps are wonderfully lucrative. Their sell price scales nicely with quality:

Quality Sell Price
Normal 400g
Silver 500g
Gold 600g
Iridium 800g

They are edible and can be found in any season, which makes them a reliable snack while exploring the dungeon. The real trick is that defeating the False Magma Cap enemy gives you a 99 percent chance to receive a Magma Cap, so I always clear every enemy on the floor before I leave.

Common Mushroom: The Everyday Forage

The Common Mushroom is exactly what its name suggests: common, reliable, and surprisingly useful. During the Fall, I find these mushrooms practically everywhere, from the Cindersap Forest to the mountains. In Spring, you can also find them in the Secret Woods, though reaching that area during your first year can be tricky without a steel axe.

What many players miss is that you can grow your own Common Mushrooms using Wild Seeds (Fa). I make these by combining:

  • 1x Blackberry

  • 1x Common Mushroom

  • 1x Hazelnut

  • 1x Wild Plum

Once planted, the seeds have a chance to produce mushrooms among other fall forage. It is a neat way to get a steady supply without leaving the farm.

I also use Common Mushrooms in the Fried Mushroom recipe, which gives me a +2 Attack buff before heading into the Skull Cavern. The Stir Fry and Tom Kha Soup recipes also call for Common Mushrooms, and Tom Kha Soup is one of my favorite farming dishes because of the +2 Farming bonus and +30 Max Energy.

Red Mushroom: Dangerous but Profitable

Red Mushrooms look beautiful, but they are not edible unless you enjoy losing health. I learned that the hard way during my early mining trips. That said, they sell for a decent amount of gold, with an Iridium-quality Red Mushroom fetching 150g.

You can find Red Mushrooms in the Secret Woods during the Summer, as well as inside The Mines at any time of year. If you have the Forest Farm, you might also spot them in the Fall. My advice? Sell them or save them for the Life Elixir recipe, which fully restores your health. That elixir has saved me more times than I can count in the deeper floors of Skull Cavern.

Purple Mushroom: The Healer's Best Friend

The Purple Mushroom is, in my opinion, the crown jewel of Stardew Valley mushrooms. It sells for up to 500g at Iridium quality, but the real value is its healing power: a Purple Mushroom can restore up to 325 Energy and 146 Health. That makes it one of the best emergency snacks to keep in your inventory while exploring monster-heavy areas.

I find Purple Mushrooms in The Mines after floor 80 and throughout Skull Cavern. They can appear in any season, which makes them a dependable resource once you unlock those deeper floors. They are also required for the Life Elixir recipe, so I always keep a few stockpiled in a chest.

Chanterelle: The Fall Secret Woods Treat

Chanterelles feel special because the only place to find them outside your farm is the Secret Woods, and only during the Fall. I always make a point to visit the Secret Woods every single day in Fall, just to gather these golden mushrooms. They sell for 160g at base quality and reach 320g at Iridium, which is a nice little profit for a short walk.

Like Red and Purple Mushrooms, Chanterelles are used in the Life Elixir recipe. I rarely eat them raw; I would rather combine them with the other ingredients to create a full health restore.

Morel: The Spring Secret Woods Delicacy

Morels are the spring counterpart to Chanterelles. You can only find them in the Secret Woods, and only during the Spring. They sell for up to 300g at Iridium quality, and like the others, they are essential for the Life Elixir. You will also need one Morel for the Fried Mushroom recipe alongside a Common Mushroom and Oil.

Growing Mushrooms in the Farm Cave

One of the best decisions I ever made on my farm was converting the small cave near the northern entrance into a mushroom cave. Once you have earned 25,000g, Demetrius will visit you and offer to set up the cave for either mushrooms or fruit from bats. I chose mushrooms, and I have never regretted it.

With the mushroom cave option, you have a chance to find every mushroom type except Magma Caps. The best part is that this works regardless of the season, which means a steady trickle of Common, Red, Purple, Chanterelle, and Morel mushrooms all year long. It is especially helpful during Winter, when foraging opportunities dry up almost completely.

Mushroom Trees and Tappers

Mushroom Trees are one of my favorite surprises in the game. During the Fall, there is a five percent chance each day that an existing tree on your farm will transform into a Mushroom Tree. They can also spread to nearby empty spaces. These special trees yield Common, Red, and Purple Mushrooms.

The best thing to do with a Mushroom Tree is attach a tapper to its side. The tapper produces mushrooms without damaging the tree, giving you a renewable source of fungus. The type of mushroom you receive from the tapper depends on the previous harvest, so the output can vary a little, which keeps things interesting.

Final Thoughts

Mushrooms are so much more than a foraged curiosity in Stardew Valley. They are a source of gold, a source of healing, and a source of some of the most useful cooking recipes in the game. Whether you are chasing Magma Caps through the Volcano Dungeon, tapping Mushroom Trees on your farm, or simply filling the farm cave with fungus, there is always a reason to keep mushrooms close at hand. With the 1.6 update still keeping the valley feeling fresh in 2026, there has never been a better time to build your own little mushroom empire. Happy foraging!
